I usually overwinter my potted plants sometime in October. I replant as needed, add more soil and spray the leaves to get rid of fungus and mites before bringing the pots back in the house. This year was no different and one Sunday in late October I embarked on this task.
My daughter, who recently started expressing interest in house plants, decided to do the same with the two Pothos plants in her room. When I went to her room later that evening, I noticed a third pot. She planted a weed from our backyard in the pot. When I asked her why she planted the weed, she simply replied: “Because it is beautiful.”
Her response made me thinking. Who decides which plant is worthy of special attention and deserves to be kept in a pot, and which one is a useless weed? What plant is deemed good looking is a matter of perception and a subjective human opinion based on appearance. If a plant makes you happy and you see beauty in it, who am I to put labels and call it an useless weed? This was a very humbling “remove all judgement” experience for me – after all, beauty is in the eye of the beholder.
I loved this. Thank you for sharing.
